Don’t Say Abuse or Homelessness or Hunting

Apparently, the NYC Department of Education is trying to ban the use of 50 specific words on state standardized tests – this might be an interesting exercise if the words weren’t potentially important topics for students to engage in productive dialogue about. True, banning words from standardized tests doesn’t mean they can’t be discussed in another school setting, but what message does it send?
